The Ripple Effect – What Part Do You Play?
You may have heard of the 'ripple effect' and been taught that your actions affect those around you, but do you truly understand how far this extends?
Do any of us really understand the depth of that passing of energy from one to another?
How are your individual actions affecting the world today and is this something that we should all be thinking about more?
In this podcast episode, Gillian Duncan, Clarity Junction host, coach and author discusses the topic of energy transfer and the 'ripple effect' that our actions have on society and the world as a whole.
Hello and welcome to the Clarity Junction podcast.
You may be familiar of the thought that our actions cause a ‘ripple effect’ on the world around us.
What we do, think, or even feel, eventually is passed on as energy to others. But it goes much further than this.
In this podcast episode, I’d like to share with you how even the smallest of thoughts and actions in your life, even the ones that you think of no importance, can have a huge effect on far more people than you will ever know.
My name is Gillian Duncan, Positive Life and Wellbeing Coach, inspiring women to live the life that they truly want, and I am delighted that you are here with me today.
This morning when I was on my daily walk, I saw a fishing boat out on the water.
It was a beautiful morning. The sun was shining in a cloudless sky. With the current lock-down situations, there was very little noise apart from the birds singing in the trees behind me and the gentle lap of the water against the shore.
It was very peaceful, and without much of a breeze, everything around me seemed still.
The boat was sailing by in the distance and all was calm.
As the boat travelled further away from me, I noticed a sudden change in the behaviour of the water as it travelled to the shore.
The water had become more alive. The tiny little rippling waves had increased slightly in size and speed. I could hear them more.
I realized that this change in the water’s behaviour had been due to the boat passing in the distance. Although the boat had passed our way a while ago, it’s movement on the water was now just being translated by the water near to me.
As I watched, listened and pondered over this occurrence, a few things came to my thoughts.
Firstly, I realized that the energy of the boat’s movements had caused the change in the sea.
Secondly, I thought of the sea as being one interconnected piece of matter. That the particles of water in the distance were all interconnected to those nearest to me.
Thirdly, I realized that I was also connected to the water, the boat and even the sailor of the boat, through this movement of energy.
I realise that’s a lot to take in, so let me explain my thoughts to you.
Firstly, the movement, or the kinetic energy coming from the boat, had a direct effect on the water. It’s presence and movement there, in the sea, was directly affecting the energy of the water particles around it and causing them to move.
This movement, although further away in the sea, produced a ripple effect in the water. This ripple was caused by energy flow that originated with the movement of the boat.
As I thought about this, I thought of the sea as a whole, but also as a collection of tiny particles that live beside each other. Not only were they interacting with those directly beside them, their action had an effect on their distantly related water particles that resided near to where I was walking.
I then began to think of that energy transfer from particle to particle and how it was affecting me.
I was noticing a relationship between the boat and the water nearest to it, as well as the water that was further from it. I was feeling the gentle breeze that had occurred through the increased movement of the water. I was hearing the energy change of the water as it met the shore. I could see the ripples on the water change to be deeper and quicker in movement.
This had influenced my internal thoughts, senses and emotions – it had an effect on my internal energy.
I had become part of this energy transfer.
If you really think about it, I had even been affected by the thoughts of the sailor.
If the sailor had decided not to sail their boat in this particular place, at this particular time, I wouldn’t have noticed the water change, I wouldn’t have felt the energy shift, I wouldn’t have felt the need to tell anyone about it, and pass this energy on to others.
Yes, that is exactly what has happened.
One person took their energy and with it, went sailing. They gave the boat energy, and the boat, in return, passed on this energy to the water. The water passed the energy onwards through each particle until the particles met the shore.
The vision of the increased ripple on the waters’ surface, the movement of the air above the water produced a breeze and the sound the energy transfer produced, then meant that I was also presented with this energy, which was then turned into thoughts, feelings and emotions.
It’s all energy from the same source, it just changed in type along the way.
This whole event, which would normally have passed me by, got me thinking about the concept of the ‘ripple effect’ in our lives.
When we talk about the ‘ripple effect’ normally we are talking about the effect that takes place when we do something charitable, such as donating time or money to a worthwhile cause.
The money that we give will go on to purchase something that is needed for the welfare of another, or the time we give will help to increase the productivity of the charity, for example.
What we actively do will then cause a ‘ripple effect’, as when this action is received by those who need it most, they will then take action, and this will improve their life.
The ‘ripple effect’ doesn’t just stop there, however.
Let’s say that the money or time that you have donated was to help a homeless charity. You gave them this asset, and what they did with it helped to take one person from living on the streets, to living in sheltered accommodation.
Once there, that person was then able to improve their physical and mental health. They received the support and encouragement they needed to feel confident enough to take more positive action steps in their life.
They reconnected with others. They found employment. They eventually found a place of their own. They went on a journey of self-development, found meaningful relationships and more joyful life. By doing all these things for themselves, they also gave back energy to those around them.
That’s the ‘ripple effect’. It doesn’t just stop after one action. It can’t. It’s energy. It can’t be destroyed – just passed on from one thing to another, by different means and through its different forms.
So, let’s take a look at our own lives and what we do with the energy that is passed on to us.
No matter what you do with that energy, it will inevitably affect those around us, and beyond – just like the boat on the water.
Whatever energy you decide to put out into the world, it will produce a ripple effect.
That’s why it is important for us to understand what sort of energy we send out to the world.
If we choose destructive actions such as littering, taking from others what is not ours, arguing or fighting, or even neglecting what is part of our own responsibilities in life – this is the energy that we are sharing with the world. This is the energy that will be passed on to others.
Just take a moment to think of the consequences of such energy being released into the world.
What effects will these actions have on nature, the planet, our fellow human beings?
This type of energy will produce a ripple effect, and sure, the energy surrounding it will no doubt change as it flows, but how long will it take before the negative energy will be turned into something more positive?
If, however you think of some positive actions that you can take on a daily basis like showing up to a meeting on time, making sure you water your plants, cook a healthy meal for you and your family, share some undistracted time with others, smile at passer-byes – how will this energy be received by the world around you?
Can you imagine the difference in the energy ripple effect that this type of energy will have?
The energy that you emit and pass on, will be absorbed, interpreted, and passed on by others.
When I remind myself of this, it always makes me stop and think of my own actions and personal development journey.
If I am responsible for energy flow to others, then I want it to be the best energy that I can give them.
That means I need to take care of my own self first, so that I can be the best I can for those around me. So, that includes making sure that I follow self-care routines to keep as healthy as I can, engage in learning so I can share my knowledge, and keep inspiring others to find the best within themselves. That way they can pass on their best to the world that surrounds them, and the ripple effect can go forwards, sharing peace and positivity.
Now, isn’t that the world we all want to live in?
I know you’re probably thinking, ‘Yes, but I am only one person’, but that’s the point. Yes, you are only one person, but just like the boat on the water, you can be the source of the ripple effect. You can decide what sort of ripple you want to see happen in the world. It all comes from you. You are the source of the energy, and what you do with it will affect more people that you will ever know.
Remember, energy never dies – and that includes the energy that you send out there into the world.
So why not start with yourself. Begin with your own self-care. Look after yourself so that you can then look after others. Work on your thoughts so that you can send more positive thoughts to the world. Take action on the things you are neglecting in your life. That could be anything from decluttering a room or going back to that course you started but never finished.
The energy that you spend on yourself, making sure you are the best person you can be, will then be shared with those around you. They will see the difference. They will be influenced by you. They will start to mirror this positivity, and, in turn, pass it on to others.
It’s time to truly understand your role in this world, as someone who absorbs and transmits energy. Whatever energy you emit to your immediate environment, is what you will receive in return.
This isn’t mystical, woo-woo stuff – this is science.
So why not take some time today, and just take a moment to address some areas in your life? What can you improve on? Where does the energy feel stale and negative? What can you do to change that? What signals are your sending out to others? How do you feel your energy is perceived? Can you make this better?
If you get stuck with all these thoughts, then take a moment to yourself, sit outside – or just open the window and look. Observe. Watch the movement of people, birds, plants and trees. Listen to the sounds around you. Feel the breeze on your face. This is all energy coming to you. Feel thankful as you receive this energy and tell yourself that you will do your utmost to pass on this energy to others in the best way possible.
That’s all for this episode.
